KYIV - Russia launched an overnight drone attack on Kyiv, hitting at apartment buildings and causing several fires throughout the city, Ukrainian officials said early on Sunday.

Emergency services were dispatched to the historic Podil district after drones hit two high-rise apartment buildings there and started fires, Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.

Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that there were no immediate reports of injuries from the attacks that also sparked fires in at least two other districts of the Ukrainian capital.

Reuters witnesses heard several blasts in what sounded like air defence units in operation.

Kyiv, its surrounding region and the eastern half of Ukraine were under air raid alerts, according to Ukraine's Air Force maps.

"Stay in shelters!" Klitschko said in his post on Telegram. REUTERS
