HONG KONG – Hong Kong singer Sammi Cheng left fans concerned after she shared a video of herself in a wheelchair.

In an Instagram post on Oct 2, the 53-year-old revealed that she had been absent from social media for the past two weeks due to a back injury that required hospital care.

“My mood has been really down. I injured my lower back during a gym workout some 10 days ago,” she said. “Since I couldn’t reach my usual orthopaedic doctor at the time, I opted for traditional Chinese treatment.”

When the pain persisted, Cheng underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, which revealed two muscle tears.

She recalled that she could still walk at the time even though it hurt.

“But the MRI place was too far away,” she wrote. “To avoid aggravating the injury, the nurse suggested that I use a wheelchair for the trip.”

The singer expressed relief that her spinal discs were unaffected, as any damage could lead to lasting complications.

Cheng, who is married to fellow singer Andy Hui, 58, has since cancelled most of her work engagements to focus on recovery at home.

She reassured fans that her condition has improved in the last few days, saying: “I can finally resume many normal activities and gradually start doing some light exercise again.”

To show her progress, Cheng uploaded later that day a photo of herself in workout gear while taking a walk.

“The sun is shining so brightly that it’s perfect for a walk,” she wrote. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
